This project involved the upgrade and extension of a 1930s cottage near the Curragh in Newbridge, Co. Kildare. Energy upgrade works formed a large part of the overall renovation with insulation and airtightness measures added to existing floors, walls and roof. A new high-efficiency gas boiler and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) unit were also installed. The house benefits from large front and rear gardens but the existing ground floor layout meant that both visual and physical connections to the outside were limited. The new plan arrangement positions the kitchen, dining and living spaces at the centre of a new landscape design which reverses traditional front-for-cars and back-for-garden thinking. Instead, morning and evening terraces are located optimally with planting for privacy where needed.
